Water treatment plant in Ruet begins trial operation, iron-free water will be available

A reverse osmosis (RO) water treatment plant has been launched on an experimental basis at Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET). The concerned persons said that this will potentially solve the long-standing problem of iron-rich water for residential students.

According to university sources, it has been launched in two of the newly built residential halls for boys and two for girls. This safe water plant will be installed in each residential hall, quarter, academic, and administrative building in phases. The project has cost about Tk 3 million to implement.

The project has been implemented under the Planning and Development Department of RUET. Professor HM Russell, Director of the department, said that the plant has been launched in four new halls initially under the direction of the Vice-Chancellor. This initiative will play an effective role in solving the problem of iron-rich water in the Rajshahi region. There are plans to expand the project further in the future.

Through reverse osmosis technology, various impurities, including harmful elements, excess salt, and iron in water, are removed using special membranes. As a result, it is possible to provide pure, clear, and healthy drinking water in this method.

Meanwhile, the students have described the initiative as timely. They said that for a long time, there has been a problem with the quality of water in the residential halls. If this plant is launched, safe water will be available. They also demanded that this facility be expanded to other halls and establishments soon.

Mehran Al Banna Yusha, a student of the university's Mechanical 2020-21 academic year, said, "We have faced various difficulties in the residential halls of RUET in the past due to the unclean water containing iron. One of which is skin and hair problems. If this initiative of the RUET administration is fully implemented, our health risk will be eliminated."
